Corona Grande 2022

Corona Grande means “Great Crown.” This is our flagship sweet wine and belongs to our Tradition line. It is made from Istrian Malvasia and White Muscat, with a small amount of the mysterious Ulovina, an ancient local grape variety now present only in negligible quantities. Our family has long held a vineyard — now very old — where the vines naturally produce low yields and only a small amount of high-quality grapes. The wine is made by drying the late-harvested grapes, which concentrates both aromas and sugars and enables this opulent, rich style of sweet wine. This method produces a wine with an excellent balance of freshness and sweetness — the foundation of any successful dessert wine.

Year: 2022

When you're planning to harvest grapes late and then dry them for up to two or three months, it’s crucial to avoid autumn rains. Moisture is the greatest threat and could undo all your hard work. In every other respect, the year was very favorable for this style. With plenty of warmth and conditions bordering on drought, the grapes developed even more pronounced aromas and very good sugar levels — exactly what was needed. All that remained was for the rains to hold off a little longer, and as fortune favors the bold, that’s exactly what happened. The little rain that did fall before the regular harvest was long gone by the time picking for Corona Grande began.

Description:

The wine has a light golden hue. What’s truly surprising is how well the color has been preserved — it’s not muted, and there are no brown tones at all. This says a lot about the style of this sweet wine. It shows very few oxidative notes, either on the nose or palate. Muscat contributes lovely floral nuances, yet these are beautifully balanced with the other aromas and don’t overpower the fruit character. The wine is vibrant and aromatically intense. You’ll find notes of flower honey, yellow blossoms, light caramel, apricot and quince compote. A hint of nutty aromas blends seamlessly into the light profile and never feels intrusive. The finish is very long, carried by the wine’s freshness and the strength of its concentrated aromas.

Gastronomic recommendation:

The wine is a dessert in itself and requires little to accompany it. Traditional dry cookies like cantuccini or vanilla crescents are an excellent match, as is an apple-based dessert. For something more adventurous, try it with soft cheeses or aged hard cheeses — you might be pleasantly surprised.
