Caldierosso 2022

Caldierosso is made from red grape varieties grown around Kaldir, on white soil. Red varieties on white soil are a unique feature of Istria. The wine carries the signature of the Motovun area, where vineyards sit at a solid altitude, constantly refreshed and ventilated by pleasant air currents. This freshness is a hallmark of the Benvenuti winery and is preserved in all their wines. Caldierosso, as a flagship wine of the winery, was conceived and vinified to be ready for enjoyment just two to three years after harvest. As for the varieties, Caldierosso represents a dialogue among great wine nations. In this lively debate, Teran is the host, preserving tradition and local character. Nebbiolo, one of Italy’s most tannic varieties, reinforces the wine’s tannic structure, while Merlot, known for its roundness and and fullness, adds body. Also in the blend is a Spanish guest, a romantic Don Quixote, contributing Mediterranean charm.

Year: 2022

One interesting aspect of complex blends is the slightly higher risk from weather extremes. Since not all grape varieties ripen at the same time, you might find yourself praying more than once for the rain to stay away before harvest. Fortunately, 2022 was a well-balanced year, with almost every phase of the vine cycle going smoothly. Although there was some rain just before harvest, the summer was dry, which helped preserve both aromas and sugars at high levels. This set the stage for excellent red wine quality – a promise that was fulfilled. The grapes achieved beautiful ripeness, complemented by the natural freshness from our high-altitude vineyards.

Description:

The wine displays a deep, opaque ruby color of high intensity, with delicate purple hues. It maintains a youthful character and is bursting with aromas reminiscent of freshly picked fruit. The nose already reveals the complexity of the blend, plum from the Merlot, red fruit from the Nebbiolo, herbal garrigue notes from the Tempranillo, and the dark cherry depth from the Teran. The tannins are already pleasantly soft on the palate, allowing the fruit aromas and freshness to shine through. The ripe grapes ensure there are no harsh tannins, making the wine very drinkable and enjoyable. The varietal characters shift and interplay, a touch of tertiary development here, a hint of sweet spice and oak influence there, and once again a return to youthful fruit.

Gastronomic recommendation:

Thanks to its soft tannins, this wine pairs well with meaty risottos and pasta dishes. It’s very pleasant alongside fuži with Istrian sausage, cured meat specialties, semi-hard cheeses, game, and Istrian prosciutto. It's a versatile gastronomic companion that can accompany everything from casual weekday meals to more festive Sunday family lunches.
